KOA has two campgrounds in Maryland. Hagerstown, and Capitol KOA compliment each other because they are both suited for different types of campers. Both sites have a family atmosphere which you might expect fromKOA, providing tent and RV spaceas as well as cabin rentals which KOA calls Kamping Kabins. Each site has picnic tables, showers and restrooms, swimming pools that are accessible from late May to early September, and Capitol KOA has a playground. If you need a touch of the twenty-first century then you will appreciate that Hagerstown has cable TV and both campsites have wireless Internet all free of charge. KOA Maryland can be found at http://koa.com/where/md/
The interesting thing about KOA Maryland is how each campsite is different. Hagerstown KOA have a mini golf course, but a big plus is the fishing which is free of charge. The campsite is adjacent to Conococheeague Creek, canoe rentals are available. Even if you're not a fisher canoing on the Conococheeague Creek can be a lot of fun. There are also tubing and rafting outfitters right outside the camp which can be found around the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. Nature and bike tails are also readily available. However, if you love history, you will appreciate what is right outside the camp. Hagerstown KOA is great for any Civil War enthusiast. Antietam Battlefield, the site where more Americans lost their lives than any other battle during the Civil War is only 12 miles away. The site of John Brown's raid in Harpers Ferry West Virginia is 34 miles away; and the Civil War's most famous battle, Gettysburg is just over fifty miles away which would take on average about an hour to get to.
Capitol KOA has the best of both worlds, they have classic camping activities with a 50 acre campsite that has a beautiful nature trail. There are also three major cities near the site Washington DC, Baltimore, and Annapolis. You can go to the nations Capital via a Heritage Tour that will pick you up right from the campground. If going on tours are not your thing Capitol KOA has a shuttle that cost $5 per person, and it will take you to and from the Washington DC subway. A tent or RV lot would still cost much less then most hotels around these cities, and getting a cabin would be comparable to what the average hotel room would cost; just make sure you bring your own sheets (check Capitol KOA rates here http://koa.com/where/md/20139/).
If you are looking for the truly rugged camping experience, that is completely secluded then KOA Maryland might be a little crowded for your taste. But, you will not be void of nature with either KOA site, both have beautiful scenery. But if you're looking for a family vacation with an economical price tag, then KOA Maryland might be just what you're looking for.
