How the Internet changed the world

The Internet, could you define it if you were asked to do so? Is it an immeasurable reference library? Is it the ultimate media for communication? Is it the money making vehicle of a lifetime? No! It is possibly the largest fraud in the history of mankind. The Internet is nothing more than a plethora of high tech graffiti. No real reference material exists on the Internet, only opinions and slanted perspectives of fame hungry journalists.

Students charged with a school report have two choices, research material that has little or no credibility, or be charged with plagiarism for copying hogwash and blabbers without giving credit.

References are plentiful on the World Wide Web. Anyone that can type a question in one of ten or more languages can get results from a search engine, but what is the validity of those results. How can we know who said what or when they said it or even if they said it. Furthermore, what makes that person an expert? There credentials are often nowhere to be found. Essentially, the World Wide Web is more a giant bulletin board than it is anything else. It exists as one of the few remaining places to freely shout or whisper your personal opinion on any subject without censorship.

Uninterrupted paths of communication sound inviting. Being able to contact anyone on your Buddy List' may advertise many advantages, but consider what is being communicated. Very few Instant Message users are communicating valuable info to one another, because there is too much risk of being spied upon. It is inevitable that the only alternative is to spew countless words of anti-wisdom with no results other than wasted time. Instant messaging is little more than an alternative to the phone handset in your teenager's room, unless you have broadband and your teenagers need not fight over the phone any longer.

Money making opportunities are so plentiful on the Internet that many authors have made millions selling paperback books that tell you how. The interesting fact would be to research how many consumers buying Make it Big Online' books are actually Making it Big'. The largest stock market dump of the new millennium was the demise of the majority of early adopting dot com enthusiasts. What is left today are much larger dot com organizations with little or no profitability and dwindling marketing budgets that consistently dissolve consumer interest. If you are making money on the Internet, be prepared for the consumption of all the little people by the Brick and Mortar' companies who saved their money for this glorious day of e-conquest.

We spend more and more of our earnings toward an online adventure each year. Those of us with our eyes open can not help but be inquisitive about the poor return on investment. If you awake from your subconscious participation in the Cyberspace donation marathon, I implore you to ask the elusive person in charge of the Internet, "What have you done for me lately?"
