Band reviews: Rage Against the Machine

by Randall Walker

Created on: January 31, 2009

If you feel you are being unfairly judged, of being treated unjustly, or maybe you just need some motivation, Rage Against The Machine is your answer.

With aggressive lyrics being backed by heavy guitar riffs, Rage brings a high level of energy to the stage, no doubt. But this band has so much more to offer you than just that. Zack De La Rocha is a poet, a mastermind of lyrical content, and he explodes through the microphone. His words are deep, vulgar, and very smooth. Good examples of his work are songs Calm Like A Bomb, Know Your Enemy, and Killing In The Name OF. And makes sure that you hear every bit of what he has to say. He believes that his voice is a weapon and he uses it to fight against the injustice ways of our government.

Lyrics are far from being all that this band has to offer. Guitarist Tom Morello has an ever so unique style of rythem. I assure you that he makes sounds that you have never heard come out of a guitar, and will probably never hear again. He is pure genius. Don't believe me, listen to the hit single Bulls On Parade of there evil empire album, and you will hear a guitar solo played with a wrench. And if that doesn't amaze you, try Guirilla Radio, you'll swear up and down that its a hormonica solo, but I assure you, its the guitar. Brilliance is the only word I can think of to describe him.

The stage presence of this band is absolutely electrifying. The crowd gets so intense, and adrenaline will rush through your blood like you would not believe. I watched a show at the Republican National Convention, by far the greatest experience of my life. And this band does everything live that they do in the studio. The day before the show, they were going to perform at a protest rally, but they got shut down, so they performed acapella in the crowd.

This band broke up for a few years, and Tom Morello, Tim Commerford, and Brad Wilk joined up with former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell to for Audioslave. Zack De La Rocha played around with some solo material. But the band has recently regrouped and has headlined some big events, including both Democratic and Republican Conventions. Whether they will do anything as for as another album is doubtful, one can only hope.

Whether you agree with their political views or not, just the music alone will intrigue you. Even Zack De La Rocha himself has said that maybe not all are views are right, but at least we stand up against what we think is not right. I highly recommend this group to everyone who likes rock music.
