I successfully nursed 3 children. The Irish midwife who delivered my first child taught me a very useful trick for sore nipples. Take a tea bag and put a few drops of boiling water on it just to wet the tea. Allow it to cool slightly and then hold it to your nipple. You can slip the tea bag inside your nursing bra if you have chores to do. The tannic acid in the tea "tans" your skin and toughens it so that you can better withstand nursing. It also heals any chapped areas. You can even do this the last couple of days before the baby is born to get your breasts ready for nursing.
Always allow your nipples to dry after nursing and make sure you use good hygiene.
A trick to help prevent post-partum depression was to eat at least two oranges or oranges and bananas every day. The potassium in these fruits can help stave off depression. This worked like a charm for me.
Make sure you completely drain at least one side each time you nurse. That will help prevent mastitis. Use nursing pads to help keep your nipples dry if you tend to leak.
