If it seems like every time you want get started on a project you have to clean your sewing space up before you can begin, chances are, it's time for some organization and clutter clean up. The more organized you are and maintain it, not only will you have a nicer space to work in, but also, you'll be able to find the tools you need when you want them. When you work in a clean and organized space you're projects are more enjoyable. Find an open weekend, put on some music, and use these tips for organizing your sewing space.

First, stash your stash. If you're sitting on mountains of fabric, then sort them out by color. Place them in containers or on shelves in a manner that is easy to get to, but also stays put. Try some clear plastic totes or coated wire mesh baskets. If your fabrics are organized, then when you go to find that perfect green you know right where to look. Novelty fabrics can go in a bin all their own or sorted based on their background color. Keep specialty fabrics, like Asian prints or reproductions together even if they cross color lines.

Notion items should also be kept tidy by setting them in a drawer with a silverware divider in it or any other type of organizer. Some hardware stores sell clear boxes with hinged lids that are perfect for keeping your items sorted. Different presser feet, bobbins, beads, and even needles can be stored in these without getting mixed together. Scissors and rotary cutters should be kept together but out of reach from small children. Also, consider getting a thread rack to keep all of your thread in the same place and off your table.

Another great way to organize your sewing space is to keep all of your books, magazines, and other reference material together on a shelf or in a cabinet. Whenever you need to find a pattern you will instantly know where your magazines are and not have to hunt for one specific one for too long. If it's handy, you can also take projects you want to do later and make a photocopy of the pages you need. Then place all of these copies of different projects in one binder, making sure to note which magazine or book each came from.

Anytime you can straighten up in your sewing space, be sure to sort items that are similar into the same area. When your sewing area is cluttered, so is your mind. With a clean space to work you'll be more likely to get work accomplished and projects finished. Once your sewing space is organized, make it a habit to clean up after yourself every time you finish sewing. The next time you want to sew your space is ready for you and so is your creativity.
