Tips for organizing a successful clothing swap

A recent television news story touted a new wardrobe and spa treatment for only $25. That sounds unbelievable, right? It turned out to be the fee for a clothing exchange and hand treatment demonstration at a beauty product store.

Although going green is trendy right now, organized clothing swaps are an old idea. Clothing swaps are a great way to save money, clean out your closet and expand your wardrobe. A friend told me they were called naked lady parties in the 1970s. Leave it to a hippie to give you the clothes off her back.

Save $25 and follow these simple steps to host your first naked lady party.

1. Make the clothing swap guest list.
Keep your first party small, about six people. Invite multiple guests of the same size or size range. For example, if you are a size 8, you should invite a couple of size 8 friends. This will give everyone a good selection in her size.

2. Decide what items to include in your clothing swap.
All items for the swap should be clean and in good to excellent condition. Those unworn clothes hanging in the back of your closet are excellent candidates. You may choose to include accessories or only clothes at your party.

3. Choose the clothing swap details.
Make it simple and specify a number of items for the guests to bring. For example, each party guest would come in with five items and leave with five different items. This allows the host to anticipate the display area required and eliminates the need for a cashier.

4. Plan party menu and activities.
Make it a real party by adding traditional party elements. Play party games and ask everyone to bring an appetizer or dessert.

5. Send the invitations.
The new postage rates make it a bit expensive to mail invitations. Consider postcard invites because the postage costs about half as much. Of course, in person, phone and e-mail invitations are free. Explain how the naked lady party works and be sure everyone understands the concept. Include the party details and specify if you want the guests to bring a dish.

6. Set up the party space.
You will need space to display the swap items. A clothing rack is ideal, but you can also drape clothing across your table and other furniture. Sorting the garments by size is not necessary unless you have many guests. Designate an area such as a bathroom or bedroom to serve as a dressing room.

Have fun at your naked lady party and enjoy your "new" clothes.
