How to pick a good physician

by Olivia Bredbenner

Created on: January 30, 2009

The time to make this decision is when you are well. However, in reality most of us only think of going to a doctor when we are sick. Especially today, when our resources are stretched to the limit. And as well, most of us are barely able to carry the insurance needed for our health care.

If you are new to a community. Make finding a physician one of your priorities. Talk to your new neighbors, and to people that you meet in the school system . Be sure that you have decided what type of physician you want, know that this choice is very personal. Today, the Internet can also confirm credentials if you feel it necessary.

Be sure that the physician you choose has been referred to you by someone you know, and has been cared for by them. Confirm that they have practicing privileges in your local hospital. Plan a visit for a check-up or a greet and meet type of visit. Although the physician may be busy. It will allow you to make contact and interact with them. Instinctively you will know in most cases, and make a connection that reassures you of their competence, professionalism, and as well as your comfort level with them. In an up to date office. There should be displays that offer free educational information . Also information on diagnostic testing , common illness and an overview of the care.

A family practice often includes physicians that can take care of any member of your family. Most of the time, if you make this choice, there will be several physicians in this practice. The chances are that you will get whoever is available to see you when you call for an appointment. Although you can ask for one of them if you have a preference, and they are available during the time you need to make a visit.

When it comes to the care of your infants or chidren, a pediatrician may be the first choice you make. Your comfort with the choice that you make, is critical to your feeling secure when your children are ill and in need of their care. A visit to a pediatric office will tell you a lot of information using your observational skills. Without the need to even ask. But always ask any question you have in mind. After checking in and affirming your insurance information and other personal information. The staff and the office environment should be child oriented. Children's toys and books may be in the waiting room. However, keep in mind that they have been shared with other children so the potential for sharing a cold or viral illness exists. The office staff, nurses and the physician should exhibit a demeanor that is appropriate to the age of your child.

When it comes to choosing a physician , remember that you are one of many patients in their practice. This relationship should be one of mutual respect . However, at all times when you are cared for, you should feel like you are in competent hands.
