Evolution and intelligent design: Taking sides

by F.J. Foster

Created on: January 30, 2009

If you'd like to start a riot, walk into a room filled with secular scientists, and shout the magic words - "Intelligent Design!" Don't lose sight of the door, though. You'll need it in a hurry.

What is it about those two words that is akin to shouting "Fire!" in a crowded theatre? And why, of all people, do scientists, who pride themselves on their reason and rationality, turn into mini-versions of the Big Bang when they hear them? Why, you'd think you attacked their religion, and tried to knock their god off his pedestal. And, you know what? You did. That god's name is Evolution.

Evolution, you see, is the opposite - and the archenemy - of Intelligent Design (ID). And the promoters of evolution are in a constant snit these days over why so much of the public, especially in America, simply doesn't believe their doctrines. One essayist, arguing for evolution, declares that people who question it are scared to admit the earth and its "magnificent diversity" weren't created by a divine being. But, maybe it isn't fear at all. Maybe the scientists themselves are to blame.

The simple truth is, evolutionists have done a lousy job selling their product. That is, what product they've had to sell. When all is said and done, folks just don't buy it, and they have their reasons. Few have to do as much with fear as with common sense. Let's start by looking at the source.

The author says it might surprise us to learn that the father of evolution, Charles Darwin, was a devout Christian. Well, we know of one who'd be surprised - Charles Darwin. Rather than get into a slugfest over who's right or wrong here, let's just let Darwin himself settle it for us - straight from his autobiography:

"But I found it more and more difficult, with free scope given to my imagination, to invent evidence which would suffice to convince me. Thus disbelief crept over me at a very slow rate, but was at last complete. The rate was so slow that I felt no distress, and have never since doubted even for a single second that my conclusion was correct. I can indeed hardly see how anyone ought to wish Christianity to be true; for if so the plain language of the text seems to show that the men who do not believe, and this would include my Father, Brother and almost all of my friends, will be everlastingly punished. And this is a damnable doctrine."

Although Darwin had a theology degree, it is interesting to note that his father, who sent him to seminary, was an atheist. His goal was to get his son a guaranteed
