Poetry: Anger

by Elizabeth Farrell

My anger
is a coiled snake
striking when stepped upon

a deadly flash of lightning
leaping out
of roiling, purple clouds

My anger
is an eruption
its black plume of smoke
rising aesthetically upward

a smoldering offering
of simmering sorrow
an incense of primitive fear

I run my hands
over the embers
locate the source and feel
the unique, trembling pain
