Death and marriage,
Her second husband Ashburn died in a British prison and soon after Betsy married John Claypool. They had five daughters and in 1817 Claypool passed away after twenty years of illness. Betsy went forward and kept the business going. She made many flags for the United States of America up until 1827.
Retirement and death,
Betsy finally retired from the upholstery business and moved in with her married daughter Susannah, who ran the business, her mother had started. Betsy Ross died at the age of 84 on January 30th, 1836. She may have been gone but she was not forgotten.
Burial,
Betsy was originally buried at the Free Quaker burial ground on South 5th street but 20 years later they exhumed her body and buried her at Mt Mariah Cemetery in Cobbs Creek Park section of Philadelphia. Once again Betsy didn't rest long, she was again exhumed and reburied in the courtyard of the Betsy Ross House in 1975. This is the grave visited by tourist today. On January 1st, 1952 the United Postal Service issued a stamp to honor the 200th anniversary of her birth.
Summary,
This amazing woman who had more than her share of trouble and sorrow in her life did something that no other person did. She made the first stars and stripes. She persevered over the years that she lived and kept her business going through all of it. It shows us today just how strong Betsy Ross was.
