Global warming is a cycle of earth, much like the four seasons we know as winter, spring, summer and autumn, but on a much larger chronological scale. We only know climate changes for the past 650,000 years, but that is a fraction of our planets age. So how can we be certain of what is going to happen with such a small amount of data? The truth is that we can't. All we can do is speculate, estimate and use theories to forecast our planets global climate.
The argument is that the current spike in global temperatures is man-made, due to the overpopulation of our planet, rising carbon dioxide emissions and greenhouse gasses. Though some feel it is not getting the serious attention it warrants from world governments, others feel it is not a major problem and rely on technology to fix it.
Whether global warming is man-made or man-aided, it will have a devastating effect on society. As many predict, temperatures will continue to rise, thus making polar ice regions smaller, thus making oceans larger and water levels higher, thus making land masses and area for 6 billion humans to live on, smaller.
There are other consequences of rising temperatures that are not hot topics for discussion. Higher temperatures will lead to more droughts, starvation, famine, less productive fertile land to grow food on which to support the developed countries. Equatorial regions may become uninhabitable, tropical climates will creep north, as will rising water temperatures, almost wiping out many kinds of cold-water fish. This would have a knock-on effect on the food chain. Problems will continue to mount and new unforeseen consequences will arise, until we peak at our global heat.
Then we will be plunged into another ice age. Our planet will go from one extreme to another in what could be as little as 100 years. If you think the effects of global warming will be catastrophic, imagine what will happen when the globe freezes!
