Self employed or working at an employer is a question most people ask themselves and is dependant on who you are and what you are ready to do to achieve your dreams to become reality.
Of course each one of us has to analyze oneself, and really think of what he is ready to do, what he wants to achieve, how much work he wants to put in and what sacrifices he is ready to allow.
To be self employed does not mean you need lots of money at the beginning, what you need is an incredible idea that will fit your life and your environment. People like Bill Gates worked in their garage for lack of funds and became one of the richest men in the world. I can tell you of many stories of people that were cycling around selling insurance policies and today are at the head of the biggest insurance companies. Even sports stars, if they did not sacrifice a lot during their younger years and put in all the efforts they did then they would not be stars today and I have seen many with potentials that refused to sacrifice some parts of their life's and therefore never succeeded
So what is needed, I will say ideas out of the box, knowing that you need to work very hard and are ready to do many sacrifices. Often you have fashion designers making one or two special models that will sell like hot cakes, or having some out of the box ideas and sell it over the Internet. In every field you can be independent, even in flower shops, or shops specializing in goods many people want and the better you do it the more clients you will have.
If you are not ready to sacrifice yourself, if you are not ready to take any risk then I would say it is best to work in a big corporation depending also on your possibilities. When you are a scientist, you might choose to join a company because it has all the equipment that you need to make your research and you will get also help from colleagues.
Naturally if you are only starting and have no education behind you, you might start working in small jobs in a company and learn. Then you will always have time to specialize learn and decide what you really want to do. Many people started in companies before climbing up either to the top positions on the company they were working for or by creating their own companies after having learned from where they worked and having learned especially how to improve and give better service.
It all depends on the individual and what they are ready to invest in time and efforts.
