Single parents: How to choose a daycare center

There is nothing more precious to parents, than their child. Parents keep their children safe, happy, loved and learning at home, so these should be the guidelines to use when choosing a daycare.

Safety

Check city licensing and complaints filed, if any, against the daycare and it's employees.

Check first aid and cpr certifications for employees.

Check references of past clients and current. If possible get a referral from someone you know personally who recommends the daycare you are interested in and get their valuable opinion.

Check with Better Business Bureau and Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing for complaints and active licenses with state.

Tour building and grounds for safety hazards, canals, fencing damaged, busy streets, dangerous community, faulty equipment, unlocked doors, cabinets, water collection areas etc. Be thorough inside and out.

Check accessibility to public view and strangers, inside the building and out. Be sure they have an area that is separate from the children, so that identification on pick up may be presented and verified prior to accessing the area where the children are.

Make sure they have not only a positive ID pick-up policy, but a security camera to monitor pick-ups as well. One in the parking area, grounds and inside the building.

Check on the immunization and public health policy for other children who are sick or do not have immunizations to ensure your child is not exposed to public health risks in the event of an outbreak. Be sure that it includes refusal to allow sick, infected or not immunized children in the daycare until a doctor note is received.

Check insurance for building, liabilities and vehicles that will be used to transport children, make sure they are active and paid. Call insurance company if needed. Inspect vehicles that are used to transport children, for safety, including belts and car seats.

Inspect toy area, to ensure children are playing with safe, clean, undamaged toys that are age appropriate. Inspect storage areas where toys are and be specific on questioning whether toys are mixed up or strictly age based playing policy. (you don't want your three year old choking on a jacks and balls for a 10 year old).

Check for cleanliness and sanitary conditions, inside and out. Check bathrooms, changing stations, functioning facilities for hand washing, sanitizers etc. Check to see if they are stocked on wipes, toilet paper, paper towels etc.

Check Food and meal menus. They should be posted.
