Reflections: My favorite guitar

by Stephen Cuomo

Created on: January 29, 2009

My favourite guitar is a black B.C. Rich Warlock Platinum Pro series guitar. It belonged to a friend of mine who quit playing guitar after getting frustrated with it, he now plays "Guitar Hero" instead. He decided he wanted a paintball gun, and put up his guitar for sale. $300, a more than reasonable price for a lightly used, normally $800 guitar. The guitar has a floating tremolo bridge, which has never gone out of whack for me, and heavy guage "Black Beauty" strings.

Now, usually your first guitar ends up being your favourite. This was not the case for me, I started out on an S.G. copy, not even an Epiphone, it was from the mid '70s and my dad got it as a bucket of parts and two pieces of wood. It was painted white, never stayed in tune and only worked through an amplifier if the patch cable was taped onto the guitar. When I got this guitar, I put my first guitar on a guitar stand and it's seriously still there.

This black guitar, which I have had for a few years now, just has a mean shape to it; it's earned the name "Warlock". I have played in a band, using it on stage, which confidence that it will not go out of tune and will always sound good. Call me crazy, a liar, what have you, but I only have to tune my guitar every 3 weeks. The strap knobs hold the guitar onto me without fail, unlike my other guitars which needed "Strap Locks", a major inconvience when you are putting your guitar away.

Some of my friends have complained about its weight when they play it. I will admit that is probably 20 pounds or greater, but I see it as beneficial. I'm really just getting a work out while playing it standing up. This isn't a big deal or anything, but it also sounds really good. It has a crisp tone, crispy and crunchy are probably the best words to describe it. It cuts above the rest of the band, the way a guitar should.

My guitar was actually quite hard to find a proper case for, atleast one that didn't look like a coffin. I'm not a goth or anything, don't want to look like one. I was using an acoustic case for a while, just because it was so big that my guitar was able to fit snugly inside of it. Finally for christmas, my father found one that fit it just right, didn't look like a coffin and had a nice place to put my tremolo arm.

You know, usually guitar that look mean don't usually have the balls to back it up, such as the Jackson Warrior my buddy owns. I'd have to say that the Warlock by B.C. Rich can back up its looks, and I would fully promote it if given the oppurtunity. It's my favourite guitar right now, and always will be.
