First-time travelers may not always give too much thought to the outfit they'll wear on the plane. Other things may be weighing more heavily on their minds at the time: they're excited to go somewhere and pre-occupied with packing or with what they'll do once they get to their destinations. Some may only think as far as choosing an outfit that will look good. But as any seasoned traveler - who has suffered through a flight sockless and freezing in their shorts while the temperature of the air on the plane hovers barely above Arctic temperatures knows - what you wear on the plane can make or break the flight. So what are some things to keep in mind for that first-time traveler in search of a comfortable airplane ride? Read on to find out...
LAYER IT UP
Layers are always a smart choice for clothing, but especially when you are going into a situation where you don't know for sure what the climate will be like. This could include a country you have never been to before, or simply into the unknown terrain of the aircraft cabin, where flight attendants seem to have an interesting habit of cranking the temperature down to levels never before experienced by human beings.
Layers are also useful for when you are traveling from one weather extreme to another, for example from Canada in the dead of winter to the sun of the Caribbean. A tank top under a sweater, for example, can be good as you can keep warm on the airplane, but then shed the sweater when you reach the Caribbean heat (at which point you stash it in your carry-on or tie it around your waist). Cargo pants that unzip into shorts are very handy as well, or alternatively you could consider bringing along a change of shorts or light pants to change into when you get close to your destination. A pair of cooler shoes can be a good idea as well, such as a pair of flip-flops or sandals, and you can plan to don these and store your warmer shoes in your carry-on.
If you plan for all temperatures, you will be prepared and will stand a much greater chance of remaining comfortable.
COMFORT IS THE KEY
So now that you've gotten the temperature under control, next you want to focus on choosing clothes that will be comfortable. Many of us have seen those people that step aboard the airplane dressed to the nines in their 3 inch heels, mini-skirts etc. Well guess who the first people to get uncomfortable on the airplane are? Those very same people. You don't have to look like an unwashed urchin while traveling, but on the other
