Ever since Audrey Hepburn wore ballet flats with skinny jeans in the 1957 movie "Funny Face" they have been a fashion constant. They can be dressed up or down, are very comfortable to wear and can be worn all year round. The best pair to buy depends on your foot shape and requirements.

Ballet flats (short for ballerina flats) are typically soft shoes that have the appearance of no heel and a thin sole. They often have a small bow at the front toe.

-What to look for when buying ballet flats-

Ballet flats are very appealing for all day wear because they are flat; however it is this flatness that can make them uncomfortable in certain instances. The straightness of the sole doesn't offer any arch support, if you have high arches you may find these cause aching in your feet and legs after many hours use. In addition the thin sole means they aren't great for shock absorption. If you walk on hard or rough surfaces all day, then this is likely to cause discomfort also.

The best ballet flat styles have a small heel and curved sole that follows the arch of the foot. These give the feet much more support then ballet slipper styles. If you intend on wearing your ballet flats for many hours on end, it is important you look for these traits.

In addition you should look for styles that have a full leather upper, with both the inner and outer body of the shoe constructed from leather. Leather allows your feet to breathe and will stretch and mold to your feet. Synthetic shoes can cause smelly feet and do not soften to the natural shape of your feet. If your ballet flats are intended for everyday use make sure they have a rubber sole or have a Topy sole applied to protect them and provide traction.

Brands to consider:

Chanel-Chanel ballet flats are iconic for their classic style. If you buy a pair of these you can rest assured they won't go out of style quickly.

French sole -this brand specializes in selling ballet flats. They class themselves as the retailer with the world's largest collection of ballet flats and pumps. Glamour magazine voted them the "Best Ballet Flats" and many celebrities covet the brand. They are offered in many boutiques or can be ordered online at the French sole site. If you have wide feet take care choosing a size because many tend to be cut on the narrow side.

Louis Vuitton- usually has a good variety of ballet flats from patent, dressy styles through to more casual elasticised versions. They have padded insoles for enhanced comfort. The dressier styles feature a slight heel and their elasticised moccasin styles often have textured 3D soles which help absorb shock.

Cole Haan-has introduced ballet flats that look stylish, but incorporate Nike Air technology for comfort and wear-ability.

Other brands worthy of a mention include; Yves St Laurent, Bally and Hugo Boss.

No one particular brand or style can be recommended as "the" best ballet flat because it really comes down to the shape of the individual's foot. If you are looking for the perfect pair, try on lots and work out what works for you!
