Building relationship with your teacher is very important for parents and the child. You will get to know of problems and take care of them right away.
11 Suggestions On How To Build A Good Relationship With Your Child's Teacher
1. Smile and greet the teacher with a hardy handshake and ask for a tour of the class room with your son/daughter. First impressions speak louder than any words or deeds.
2. Now is the time to ask questions of concern that you have before school starts.
Some questions might be:
Is art, music, phonics or speech, physical education taught by another teacher? Our boys were so excited about art in grades 1-3 and talked about colors and drawing so I let the music teacher know. Our boys gave up their recess class just to play a recorder and be in the chorus during elementary classes. The concert we attended was awesome so I let the music teacher know we enjoyed it.
If so, how long is the class and where do they meet?
Do they have their own room or do they meet in the gym or cafeteria? Our boys had a speech problem and had a 1/2 hour class with a speech therapist.
Is the reading group divided into level groups?
Are there volunteers working with the teacher in the classroom?
3. Be an encourager and uplift the teacher by sending notes how your child is learning and sharing with parents at home. Share what your child likes most about the class.
4. Respond to any notes sent home by the teacher that need a signature or a response to questions.
5. Make teacher aware of any diet or health issues with your child like diabetes, allergies, special meds for the nurse. Teacher needs to know what is in foods brought in by parents as their child may be allergic to peanuts. Another child may not be allowed to have chocolate or any sugar.
6. Volunteer at the school either in the classroom or copying papers for teachers in the teachers room. You will see and hear first hand what happens in the classroom and teachers room. If the teachers are complaining about not enough supplies or whatever you can now pray for them privately at home and watch God answer your prayers. Being where the action is a big help for you to know your child's teacher and get to know other teachers as you work in the teachers room and class room.
7. Give your child's teacher a gift at Christmas time. Our 2 boys each took a poinsetta plant to their teachers one Christmas. John's first grade teacher was sad that day as ice on the roof had melted and water leaked in her closet where all her supplies were. She was uplifted and smiled when she saw John walk in with the poinsetta plant.
8. Go to school activities, field trips, parties and offer to bring healthy snacks. One year our boys made a great big pinata shaped like a christmas ornament and filled it with candy. The teacher was proud and happy to have something different and exciting for the students.
9. Go to Open House for your child's classroom. Our boys had bought a cactus plant and was caring for it themselves. They brought it for a science display table during open house. John's cactus had grown so high. They had to walk almost a mile to school and they carried it without dropping it. Many parents commented on the cactus and it made John proud.
10. Let your teacher know you are checking homework and helping them learn their multiplication tables. John was in third grade and was having a hard time learning multiplication. So while he did the dishes I would quiz him. He was in tears at times. Then when I toldhim that after a certain number the numbers were reversed and had the same answer he excelled rapidly. They had a multiplication bee contest for his class, then all the third and fourth grade classes and John won them all.
11. It is important to say thank you by the parents and child to their teacher. Our boys when they were older went back to the elementary school to thank their teachers for giving them a great excitement about learning and how much they appreciated that great start later on in their years. You should have seen the beaming faces of the teacher. Probably made her day just to hear and to see that they came back in person to tell them.
