How to treat the flu

Flu season is upon us. It seems like once one person you are close to or a co-worker catches it, everyones got it including yourself. You start feeling under the weather, tired and worn out. Your fever spikes, your muscles hurt, you're coughing, sneezing, and your nose is running non-stop. Sounds like you've got the flu for yourself. Here are a few tips for treating the flu virus and getting better faster.

Just like your mother always told you, rest and drink plenty of fluids. It is good advice for sure, and good for treating the flu. You can take over the counter medications to alleviate the symptoms also. Take a day or two off work, and avoid running errands. Cover your mouth and use a tissue when you sneeze to avoid germs being spread.

Also, if over the counter flu remedies just don't seem to be working, get examined by your doctor. They can often give you antiviral medication to help treat the flu quicker. Also, if you have significant health problems, are pregnant or over sixty five years of age, the flu can often be harder to get over. Visit your doctor and get medication to help aleviate the symptoms and lesson the flu alltogether.

Another method for treating the flu before you even get it is the flu shot. Flu shots contain antibodies to protect against certain strains of the flu so you can be immune to it. Sometimes flu shots don't work, since there are so many strains of the flu.

If you have had the flu for a prolonged amount of time, you may want to visit a doctor. If you have had a prolonged high fever, are not eating or drinking fluids for a period of time, confusion, persistent vomitting, or worsening symptoms, visit your doctor or the emergency room right away. You may start getting dehydrated also. It is important to watch for these warning signs, you may have a virus other than the flu. Make sure once you are at the hospital or doctors office to tell the doctor or nurse about your symptoms. They may want to isolate you right away or give you a mask to wear, to make sure the flu is not spread to other people.

The flu is a virus that affects millions and millions of people a year. It is no fun no matter what age you are. These are just a few tips for treating the flu and making it easier to deal with. Just take proper precautions for prevention and treatment, and the flu should not be a major event to deal with. You will be up and better in no time.
