Poetry: Misery

by Gemma Cantwell

When all you see from the world around you

Is the cruelty, the anger and rage;

All you know and believe to be true,

Is violence waiting to engage.

A dirty look or a knowing sneer

Are all it will take to make you see

This world doesn't want you here;

But what you think is truth, may not be.

The harshest side of the life we live in

Is not kind or good or happy.

It is a struggle that is hard to win

And a test that is never easy.

But to give in to the fear and let it be,

Let it consume you and drive you on,

Will mean you can never open your eyes to see

Where the good and the beautiful come from.

We all need hope to keep us whole

And faith to hold our smile.

No heart is black with broken soul

If we stay strong all the while.

Believe in the love hidden in our lives

And the goodness we may not see;

Believe it and hope for it until it arrives

And then escape from your prison of misery.
