the sea turtles being fed. Go to Pirate's Lagoon to thread your way through a maze or enjoy the play area. The Sea Life Park address is 41-202 Kalanianaole Highway #7 in Waimanalo. The park phone number is (808) 259-2500. Their website is at http://www.sealifeparkhawaii.c om/default.asp.
Across from Sea Life Park is Makapuu Beach which is best for children ten years and up due to rough waves and an undertow. A better beach for the youngest children in the family is Lanikai Beach located on Mokulua Drive in Kailua. This golden sand beach stretches for a mile. Adults will love the beautiful view while the children play in the gentle waves. Older children can boogie board a little further out. Access to the beach is by way of a public walkway from Kailua Beach.
The Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park in Kapolei is the only water park in Hawaii. It is about thirty miles west of Honolulu's Waikiki Beach at 400 Farrington Highway. Besides the water rides for older kids and adults, their Keiki Kove has miniature waterfalls, water cannons, and keiki-sized water slides. Visit their website at http://www.hawaiianwaters.com/ $sitepreview/hawaiianwaters.co m/index.cfm or call them at (808) 674-WAVE (9283).
For families which enjoy hiking, the easiest Oahu trails are in lush valleys or along the shoreline. The Kaena Point trail along the western shore of Oahu is four miles long but offers views of the ocean and ascends only 70 feet. The Kaena area is part of a state-managed Natural Area Reserve. The eastern side of the island has many of the novice hiking trails which might not tucker out the youngest members of the family or the parent who must carry them. The Judd Trail in the Nuuanu area on Nu`unau Pali Drive is 3 miles long and goes through a valley with stands of Norfolk Island pine and bamboo. The Ulupau Head trail is half a mile long and follows the shoreline near Mokapu. The Waimano Pool trail in the Pacific Palisades region of the southeastern part of the island is 3 miles long and passes by pools, waterfalls, and a forest. The Hawaiian Trail and Mountain Club can advise parents of current trail conditions and which trails are best for families with very young children. They may be contacted via their website at http://htmclub.org/index.html. The website has links to a calendar, schedule of planned hikes, and a newsletter. Their Oahu trail list is located at http://htmclub.org/trails/trai ls.html.
