How to talk to your boyfriend

by Susan Nichols

Created on: January 28, 2009

One of the most important things a girl should always remember is that guys see things differently than girls do. Their minds work differenty and things that make sense to us may not make a bit of sense to them. It goes the other way as well. Things that make sense to guys don't always make much sense to girls. The biggest key in communicating with your boyfriend is your approach on certain topics. If you want to confront him about something, the best way to go about doing it is to use the word "you" as little as possible. For example, rather than saying "You don't listen to me" you should say "I feel like when I'm talking you're not listening to me". You're still using the word "you", but it is in a different context and is less threatening. You also always want to make sure that you are compeltely honest about everything. There should never be secrets between you and your boyfriend. The more secrets there are, the harder the relationship will be. Another important thing to know is that not all guys are the same. Some are more sensitive than others. You want to make sure you know your boyfriend well enough to know how to approach situations. Some guys don't like to talk through problems, but rather they want to drop it and pretend like it never happened. This is actually worse than talking through things because the problem is still there. My boyfriend always likes to talk things through. We keep our voices as low as possible and we try not to use negative words towards each other. In the even that one of us slips up and says something rude or raises our voice, we always apologize for it. It is always a good thing to admit when you are wrong and to fix the situation rather than to put the blame on someone else or even worse, act like nothing happened. Communication and trust are two of the most essential parts of a successful relationship. Without these two things no relationship can successfully survive and in the end time is wasted and feelings are hurt. Always be sure that when you or your boyfriend want to have a talk about something serious, there are no other people in the room and no other distractions such as television or video games. If the conversation is important then all attention should be focused on each other. I have also learned that when you are having an important conversation you should let eac other speak your minds without interrupting. This allows each person to express how they feel and what it is that they would like to say.
