Taking your children skiing for the first time: Tips for parents

Swooshing down a slope of crisp snow with your child at your side is an unforgettable experience. Skiing is a thrilling lively sport filled with feelings of accomplishment, acquired skills, a little danger and that "good" type of tired at the end of the day. Taking your children to the slopes the first time can be overwhelming but remember, ski resorts are going to work hard to meet your family's needs so you will come back to ski again.

Most ski resorts have packages for first time skiers and kid programs that are reasonably priced and include skis, boots and poles, lift ticket and lessons. Often there are half-day options for young children. Instructors are skilled at wooing the munchkins to follow while they are practicing their wedge turns. The staff in the rental area will go out of their way to make sure your child's ski gear have the best fit and if a problem does occur, they can just swap equipment for a different size if needed.

Many ski resorts provide baby sitting to allow parents to ski knowing their infant is safe and warm. Or if you prefer, adults can rotate two hour shifts watching the little ones in the lodge where there is often a fireplace to stay warm by. Oh yes, of course never try to ski with a baby in a front carrier. Bringing juice boxes and portioned snacks will help pass the time plus skiing does take a tremendous amount of energy which is best replenished with frequent meals and drinks.

Parents will have more fun skiing knowing that their child's safety needs are met. For sunscreen, a Chapstick type is easiest to use for both faces and lips. Goggles protect everyone's eyes from the UV rays and injuries. Helmets are necessary as kids are not always able to react quickly to avoid a collision. Helmets usually can be rented at the ski resort.

Clothes make a tremendous difference in everyone's comfort. Buy real ski socks which are padded and wick away moisture. Ski skin type long underwear is thin and warm along with water-repellent bibs or pants and gloves will keep everyone dry. The key is to dress in multiple layers of non cotton clothing. Babies do best zipped into one piece snowsuits.

Ski resort websites provide a wealth of information on programs, prices, lodging, activities and services to plan your vacation. Going snow skiing together will create long lasting memories for your whole family to share for years to come.
