With so many people today seeking employment, the question of how to make money is on the minds of many who are looking for jobs. Can you make money with a simple blog using your computer? In this article, we'll take an in-depth look at how your blog can make money and possibly even become a source of income.
What Is a Blog?
With the evolution of social media on the web, we've seen the definition of the word "blog" blur a bit in recent days. Generally speaking, a blog (short for web log) is a personal or professional journal of daily posts about any given topic. Readers can then share, rate, and comment upon each blog post.
To Google or Not to Google
One of the best ways to make money from your blog is a free service provided by search engine titan Google. Adsense is a Google product designed to make money simply by placing advertising code into your blog. You are responsible for selecting the advertising and displaying it in your blog; Google is responsible for matching advertising based on the content of your site.
Google is also responsible for paying you for your advertising, which happens when you hit the $100 mark. You can place several Google ads anywhere in your blog for an indefinite amount of time.
Promoting Your Blog
Once you've created your blog and have strategically placed advertising within it, you must promote the blog in order to make money. Promotion takes many different forms including word of mouth, submission to popular search engines, and proper keywording to make your blog friendly to Google search bots.
Another way to promote your blog is submission to social sites on the web. These sites include Technorati, Yahoo! Buzz, Mixx, Furl, Delicious, Magnolia, and Digg. And don't promote your blog just once; submit to these sites for every blog entry you post.
Other Ways to Make Money from a Blog
In recent years, numerous revenue-sharing sites on the web have emerged that guarantee writers a chunk of the advertising revenue generated from the site. Virtually all of these sites rely on the aforementioned Google for their money making advertising.
Members of revenue sharing sites write content into the site, then get paid a royalty on each article that accrues over time depending on advertising impressions, clicks, and/or page views. With enough articles accruing money every day, the writer begins to receive what is called residual income.
Residual income is advantageous because it means the writer continues to receive money even while he or she is sleeping at night. The money keeps coming in and doesn't stop; then it goes into your PayPal account and accrues even more in a PayPal money market fund.
You can make money blogging on sites such as Xomba, Bukisa, and ZestBit. If you are more inclined professionally, you can make money writing quality articles for Newsvine, Helium, Associated Content, and Suite 101.
If you want to make money with a blog, lots of options are available. Just remember the cardinal rule: you won't get rich overnight, and making money with a blog takes lots of hard work and dedication.
