Guide to handbags

Today virtually every woman carries a handbag, but this wasn't the case until the early 1900's. Prior to this it was the man's job to carry the belongings. As women began to exert more independence, they began carrying their own things and so began the desire for handbags.

Handbags now come in a plethora of shapes, styles, fabrications and colors. They start from only a few dollars through to many thousands of dollars.

Handbag styles:

Top handle-this refers to a standard handbag which has a short handle which is hand held rather then worn over the shoulder.

Shoulder bag-this refers to a standard handbag which has a strap long enough to be worn over the shoulder. Clutch-these are smaller hand held purses which tend to be used for special occasions. Some come with an optional strap.

Hobo-the hobo style handbag is shaped a bit like a U and is typically a little sloppy rather then very structured. They tuck in well beside the body.

Framed-a framed handbag has a metal opening that clips together and typically the rest of the bag is constructed from fabric.

Tote-is a large rectangular bag that is usually doesn't have any fastenings at the top. They are useful to carry books, magazines or work paperwork.

Messenger-these bags can usually fit A4 sized items inside and they have a strap which goes across the body. They are crossed between a shoulder bag and a backpack.

Round handle-these bags are usually made from fabric or raffia and are attached to two round circles that form the handles and support for the bag. Handles are often made from bamboo.

Drawstring-these bags use a drawstring mechanism to do up rather then using zips or magnetic closures. Two of the most common styles are small special occasion bags or large casual bags, suitable for the gym or beach.

If you are looking to buy a new handbag and are not sure where to start, ask yourself these questions:

What do I need to carry in it? This will determine the appropriate size.

Do I want to be able to easily retrieve items or would I like something more secure? A tote provides easy access, but a zippered hobo would be more secure.

What do I plan to wear with this handbag? If the bag is to go with office outfits a structured handbag will look good, but if it's to be worn with soft feminine clothing a slouchier bag might be better. The color and fabric of the handbag should be considered in relation to your outfit also. For example, a chocolate suede bag would look great with winter casual gear and a large straw bag would be ideal for summer resort wear.

What size and shape am I? Your handbag should be proportional to your size, for example larger women suit larger handbags. Also make sure that your handbag finishes at a height that draws attention to your best features, not the one's your not keen on. For example, if you are pair shaped, you will want your handbag to finish at your tiny waist or under the arm, not at your hip area.

With so many choices available, asking yourself these questions can help you to get a clear picture of what your needs are. Now you just need to determine a budget and remember to stick within it.
