Liberal adult education, also known as continual education, is simply any educational program designed for adult students. They range from High School diploma programs through short part time college courses to full time University studies. They are organized and run by various educational institutions, municipalities, and community centres.
The rise in demand for adult education in recent years also resulted in increasing number of adult education programs. New immigrants, mature people who lost their jobs because of economic troubles and shifts, as well as mothers who were absent for many years from the workforce to care for their babies; all these groups of adults are in need of continuing adult education. In order to accommodate adult learners, liberal adult education provides flexibility and encourages more individualized forms of study such as evening classes, and more recently, on-line studies since mature learners commonly need to manage both work and family responsibilities while studying.
Evening classes allow students to attend school after working hours and provide needed instruction to the material later studied at home thus allowing adult learners to do it largely at their own pace. The latest revolution in adult learning, however, came with distant education which is done at home via the Internet.
The latter gives even more flexibility and opens greater new educational opportunities to adult learners. Nearly every university and college offers on-line courses and even entire degree programs. The students only need to have fast enough computers with access to the high speed Internet in order to complete such studies. It removes such obstacles as the commute to campus or a need to find childcare services because students can learn at any time of the day and week that suits them best. They have total liberty to arrange the material and hours of study as long as they submit required homework papers by the deadlines specified by on-line instructor at the very beginning of the course.
On-line continual education also provides the opportunity for direct communication via e-mail, discussion forums, video conferences, and chats with the instructor as well as with fellow online students. This in turn enables the students for more comprehensive and more effective study, as they have room in this kind of setting to explore the material in greater depth.
The type, length, costs, and prerequsists of liberal adult educational courses varies depending on individual institutions providing them and the credential acquired are treated equally with those earned through traditional school setting. Therefore when considering continual education it is important to get specific information from a given institution of choice. They all make counseling to prospective students available free of charge. Grants and other programs that help in paying for tuition also apply to liberal adult education students who study in institutions accredited by local government.
