Best video games ever

by Ashley Shankle

Created on: January 26, 2009

There have been too many games released in the past 30 years to rank any as the best ever made. There are people who say that Pong or Galaga were the best games ever developed, while others claim newer titles like Gears of War or Final Fantasy XII are the pinnacles of gaming. There is no right answer. There are some wrong answers - there have been some truly unplayable games released over the years - but a right answer to this question to you, in someone else's eyes, is not always right.

With that being said, these are just a few of the games I believe deserve recognition. My opinion may not be yours, but that's what makes gaming great, right?

Super Mario Bros (NES)

Mario and Luigi's first platformer came out in the US in 1985 and has since been rereleased on every Nintendo console since. It holds the title of best selling video game of all time, with its various incarnations selling 40 million copies to date. However, high sales shouldn't make a good game, a good game should make the sales. What made the game really stand out in that generation was the straight-forward, addictive gameplay, and impressive graphics for the time. There was nothing else that played or looked like Super Mario Bros. and that same gameplay from 1985 still intrigues and entertains old and new gamers alike.

Final Fantasy 6 (SNES)

Final Fantasy 6 took everyone's preconceptions of RPGs and turned them upside down. The game's storytelling was nothing short of epic, with the most theatrical-stlye narrative any Super Nintendo game had ever hosted. On top of that, the game featured unprecedented graphics, a wide array of interesting characters, and a few minigames to keep the formula from getting stale.

The newer generation of gamers usually reveres Final Fantasy 7 as the best in the series since it was the first on the Playstation and stole many's hearts as their first RPG. What they don't realize is that Final Fantasy 6 did everything that Final Fantasy 7 did, but better. It was more intriguing, more fun, and the characters were infinitely more interesting. If you play RPGs and haven't put your hands on Final Fantasy 6, you owe it to yourself to do so.

Resident Evil 2 (PSX)

The Resident Evil series on the Playstation really pioneered the survival horror genre. No game had been released before that was such a guilty pleasure. You endear awful (verbal) dialogue, shoot zombies, survive attacks from hideous monsters, run around like crazy trying to figure out where to go, and collect herbs you can
