The basics of golf: Learning to play

To a new golfer, learning the game can be an overwhelming experience. It doesn't have to be that way, though. Good golf is easy golf. Good golf shots always feel easy and effortless. To achieve this, a very important thing must be learned what to do to swing the club correctly. The ideas used to do this need not be difficult or complicated. Once you are able to say, "this is simple", your greatest challenge as you improve will be to keep it that way!

MISLEADING TERMS

As you begin to learn this game, you will discover that there are many people who are more than willing to offer advice. However, as well meaning as these people are, they probably are not trained to give advice on the golf swing. More often than not, the advice that they offer will be detrimental to your progress. If you find yourself confronted with unwanted advice, just politely explain to the person that you are currently in the process of taking lessons. Tell them that you appreciate their advice, but do not want to get off track with what you are trying to accomplish.

Some of the misleading terms and phrases with which you may be confronted are as follows:

Head Down, Still, and Eye On the Ball:

Trying to keep the head down, or still, and trying to keep your eye on the ball will restrict the natural motion of your body. This is one of the reasons many golfers have stiff necks and sore backs. In the golf swing, your body should move naturally in response to the motion of the club. Any attempt to hold your head down, or still, will restrict your body from moving correctly. In every other sport, we watch where the ball goes, not where it was. Why should golf be any different? When you hit a nail with a hammer, is it not natural to look at the nail?
