First of all, it depends what you will be using it for.
If you mainly want to print B&W text, then a Laser Printer which uses carbon toner, is the cheapest and fastest option.
If you are likely to be printing photos or colour graphics then an Inkjet is the better option.
To pick the one that is right for you, some things to look at are:
What it can print on to (paper, labels, transfers, CDs transparencies etc).
The number of pages per minute (ppm) it can print.
How many different ink cartriges is uses (from 3 to 6)
Whether it requires special paper.
Typical number of prints before cartridges run out.
Cost of replacement cartridges (these can be very expensive).
It's now quite possible to buy a brand new Inkjet printer for the cost of replaceing all the cartridges! So it's important to weigh up the cost of consumables before committing to one manufacturers printer.
