Reflections: Abortion

by Friend

Created on: January 26, 2009

With the changing of laws and introduction of abortion-inducing drugs, the volitional termination of pregnancy has now become more liberated for the common person as compared to the past. However, that the presence of a signature on a piece of paper and a chemical like RU-486 should determine the fate of unborn millions is a reflection of how weakened our will and conscience has become.

Nations influence each other since none want to be left behind in the global race toward self-sustenance and economic breakthrough. This explains why many governments have enacted laws and policies in favour of abortion after the Western world endorsed it. They simply followed suit.

But even this and the debate on population increase cannot be used as an excuse to engage in what has been rightly referred to as a 'silent holocaust'. By endangering the next generation, we are consciously contributing to the erosion of the value of human life. We have found it easier to destroy in the short-term than to build in the long-term. Yet we have neither the knowledge nor resources to handle the massive consequences of taking such a course of action.

Privacy laws for instance, have been propounded as a basis for the pro-choice argument. However, infringing on the right to privacy on the part of the parent ceases to apply in this matter. There is nothing confidential about the worldwide massacre of gifted minds and souls that belong to the coming generation.

Induced abortion is the subjective attempt to find a quick-fix remedy for contemporary problems whose real origins lie far away from the womb. It is a way of sweeping under the rug the real challenges that we need to consciously confront as a human society. And like hacking away at the branches of an unwanted tree, these selfsame issues are bound to compound with time, so long as the root remains untouched.

We offer it to the teenager whom we abandoned to drugs and illicit sex and have failed to educate on the evils of promiscuity. We avail it to rape victims, trapped at the other end of an expansive pornography industry whose raw poison is breeding multiplied numbers of sexual offenders worldwide.

We endorse it for the sufferers of ineffective economic policies as well as those whose financial insufficiency has come about due to an addictive dependence on social welfare. We make it available to ordinary couples as a way of exempting them from their duty toward sound parental judgement on family well-being and future.
