Did God send Jesus to us so we would be saved from God's wrath without needing to follow His holy commandments?
Absolutely not!
The law which was made null and void at the cross was not the "The Law of God" (the Ten Commandments) which is also known as the Moral Law, it was the "The Law of Moses" (the "Book of the Law") which is also known as the Mosaic Law.
The Law of Moses defined the Israelites means of atonement for breaking The Law of God, and since God sent Jesus as the ultimate atonement for our sins, those laws no longer apply.
So, what was God's purpose for sending Jesus?
In essence, He said, "Let me show you how it's done."
Jesus demonstrated to us, as God incarnate, how to live our lives in obedience to His commandments, and He obeyed His Father all the way to His death...which, by the way, was the result of OUR disobedience to His laws.
Jesus was sacrificed for our lawlessness in a way that showed us what separation from God will be like if we don't repent.
It's really that simple.
Sure, He "summed up" the commandments, as you can see in Matthew 22:36-40:
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
...but when you READ them you'll understand why.
Here they are; the first four show how to love God, and the last six show how to love the people He created (your neighbor):
1. You shall have no other gods before me.
2. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.
3. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God.
5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you.
6. You shall not murder.
7. You shall not commit adultery.
8. You shall not steal.
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
10. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that
