The political machine and its pawns: The family next door

by E. A. Mourn

Created on: January 26, 2009

I am constantly amazed at the number of people who think that politicians are honest. First of all, you can't even get into the game unless you have been somewhat corrupted. I'm not saying that all politicians are bad people; we are all guilty of something. Politicians, however, are guilty of playing the political game, a game that uses the Republican and Democratic platform as a chess board, and yep, you guessed it, the American public plays the role of the pawns. There are kings and queens, bishops and rooks, and knights that always change from time to time, depending on which party is moving the pieces around, but the pawns are always the working and non-working class citizens. In some cases the semi-wealthy end up as pawns as well.

All you have to do is look down through history and start counting all the broken promises. Look at the national debt. Look at the scandals. If politicians used the time they spent plotting and manipulating the public, first to get in office, then to stay in, and instead used that time doing the job they were picked for, such as working on solutions for the environmental, economic and world relations issues we face (one of the largest issues being the war we are currently fighting, or now the occupation that has taken, and is still taking, far too many American lives) then maybe, some of these issues may be at least partially under control.

Why does the government keep funding programs that don't make any sense? I think that the core reason is because of the long standing fight between the liberals and the conservatives that overwhelms and infects every issue to the point that each proposition turns out looking like an argument between two spouses, both determined never to give in and say they are wrong. In fact, most of the issues have been fights that have gone on for so long that, much like the McCoy's and the Hatfield's they don't even remember what they are fighting about. On occasion, I will see a politician who I really believe feels passionate about an issue, but due to the pressure of his or her party, and other factors that may interfere with their own career; nothing is done or said about the problem. Instead, they just keep moving us in front of them, so that they don't have to take the blast of the front lines. We have turned into more of a human shield for our political figures, rather than the people they are supposed to be looking out for. That is what the pawns are for, aren't they?

The machine is breaking down
