I write this article on "Simple hangover cures" while recovering from a hangover. So, that's me off to a good start! However, I would argue that having been through the misery, pain, gut-crunching and churning hell, I can confidently say: I know where I went wrong.
The first and most simple cure for a hangover is also the most illogical: avoid alcohol. But this is like saying a cure to a sports injury is not to play sport in the first place, or a cure for obesity is not eating. Sadly, no - although there may be some teetotaller who hates sports and only eats organic lettuce, cucumber and boiled rice, who is feeling pretty smug right now!
For the rest of us: here are my tips for avoiding the misery of hangovers.
Food
I find that a can of coke and a bag of salt and vinegar crisps help no end, by replenishing your salt levels and boosting your battered body with some caffeine. Another food ace is ice cream - according to my not-very-scientific mind, I believe ice creams works by "numbing the hangover". I should have become a Dr, I hear you cry! Seriously though, I don't know why it works, but it works.
Fluids
On the night itself, make sure you drink non-alcoholic beverages such as water or fruit juice, as this will help keep your body hydrated - one of the main causes of a hangover headache is dehydration. Maybe try to alternate between an alcoholic drink and a soft drink, although be wary of fizzy drinks as these can actually speed up the rate of alcohol-absorption in your bloodstream. Also, try to remember to drink some water before going to bed, at the end of the night; and if possible, eat something before bed too as this will boost your sugar level and help calm your stomach down.
On the morning after, drink lots of water. I like pints of fizzy water, and cranberry juice; fizzy water for obvious reasons, and cranberry because it's amazing for de-toxing your body.
I also find a cup of tea with a spoonful of sugar or honey can be a bit of a life saver. However, be aware that caffeine also has a dehydrating effect on your body, so make sure you only drink tea or coke in moderation, and indulge heavily in pints of water.
Eat before or during drinking alcohol
As you will undoubtedly know, it is vital to line your stomach before indulging in alcohol. Eat lots before you go out, particularly fatty foods as the fat content is effective at slowing down the absorption of the alcohol and protect your stomach from the alcohol.
Helpers
Some days only headache pills or tummy settlers will help fight the hangover. The most effective ones for me are Alka Seltzers, as these settle my whole system; or Pepto Bismol for de-churning my stomach. I only take then when absolutely necessary, though, as a hangover means your body is already suffering and crying out for goodness and a good ol detox.
Sleep
Yes, sleep is magical when you have a hangover, except when your thumping head or churning stomach prevents this. But when you can, make sure you catch up on your zzzzzzzzzz's to ensure your body has the best opportunity to recover and detox.
Relaxation
Try to do as little as possible when you are hung-over, and don't make the mistake of thinking you can do anything worthwhile (or maybe that's just me!). Rest as much as you can, and help your body bounce back.
