As a boss, even a very experienced one, you sometimes won't be able to tell employees that spell trouble at the interview. You'll find out only after you've hired them and seen them in action awhile. Then you'll easily be able to see which of the ten worst types of employees you've got on your hands.
Surprisingly, most of the problems these employees create are people-related, rather than performance-related; and if you confront them, they will most likely look at you in amazement and deny any wrongdoing.
Let's take a look at the worst types of employees a boss can have; and if you're a boss, see how many of the ten you've hired:
1. The Time Impaired/Absentee
This one is almost always late for work and always has an excuse. Some excuses are acceptable (if they are true), but most of them are pretty lame, for example, "I had to take my neighbor to her dentist appointment because her husband is out of town, and she doesn't drive." Yeah, right. But wait, there's more:
Looking around for John? It's Friday. You should know by now that John is never here on a Friday. How does he get away with it? Either he's a great employee otherwise, or he's a management favorite. However, if neither of those explanations is true; he will be found out some day soon, and he will have to play his game at another company.
2. The Rumor Monger
The rumor monger just loves to stir things up by starting outlandish rumors about co-workers but is also known to create rumors about the company itself ("I heard they're going to start laying off half of the assembly workers next week.") Don't ever listen to what this person has to say, and certainly don't spread it any further.
3. The Drama Queen
Every day there is a major crisis with her. She's not happy unless the world revolves around her and everyone is at her beck and call to help her in some way. That can mean helping by fixing something at her house (free of charge, of course), or babysitting for her children. Stay away! Don't get caught up in her psychotic world, or you're bound to be sorry.
4. The Excuse Maker
This one has excuses for everything, why they didn't get that quarterly report done on time, why they never made the Tuesday afternoon meeting, etc. Even if their work is good, this will wear thin after awhile.
5. The Personal Shopper
Sarah always looks busy. She is constantly on the computer. But if you look a little closer, you can see that she's on eBay or amazon.com picking out personal purchases. Why can't she
