How to crochet a baby hat

When I first learned to crochet, one of the first things I learned was how to make a beanie. The pattern is simple, but sometimes difficult to explain. I will do my best to explain it properly.

Select a yarn that is easy to handle, but is still soft. Suggested colors would be pastels or perhaps colors that match a baby's outfit. Begin with a slip knot and attach five more slip knots for a total of six. Link the last slip with the first slip to create a ring. Slip three knots to begin the first row.

First Row:

Using the center of the ring as your space, double-crochet fourteen crotchets. Link the final crochet with the (original) third slip knot to complete the round.

Second Row:

Do three slip knots to begin the next row. Double crochet in first double-crochet, then do two double crotchets in the next double-crotchet. Repeat this pattern until the row is complete. Link the final crochet with the third slip knot.

Third Row:

Do three slip knots to begin the next row. Double crochet in first two double-crochets, then do two double crochets in the next double-crochet. Repeat this pattern until the row is complete. Link the final crochet with the third slip knot.

Fourth Row:

Do three slip knots to begin the next row. Double crochet in first three double-crochets, then do two double crotchets in the next double-crochet. Repeat this pattern until the row is complete. Link the final crochet with the third slip knot.

Fifth Row:

Do three slip knots to begin the next row. Double crochet in first four double-crochets, then do two double crochets in the next double-crochet. Repeat this pattern until the row is complete. Link the final crochet with the third slip knot.

Sixth through Final Row:

Do three slip knots to begin the next row. Now do a complete round of double crochets all around the hat. Link the final crochet with the third slip knot. Repeat this row (including linking the ends and doing three slip knots up to the next row) until you reach the proper length, usually a total of about ten rows, depending on the child.

Final Row:

When you come to the end of the final row, after linking the last crochet with the slip knot, make one more slip knot, but cut the yarn at about 1/4 inch from the hat. Pull this piece tight to create a knot. Knot once more to be sure. Thread the yarn with your hook through the stitches, weaving so that the yarn is hidden.

This is the most basic of patterns, and can be altered with various stitches and designs. This pattern is designed for a beginner crocheter. Once this has been mastered, one may get creative in their crafting endeavors and change colors, switch up stitches, and even adorn the hat with ear flaps, pom-poms, or crocheted shapes.
