For many people, having a log home is a dream, whether it be a vacation home or primary residence. A log home can be built in the mountains or in the town where you already live. Log home kits are available or you may choose to go totally custom and hire an architect to design your dream home. The land you purchase will influence the type and features of the home. It is very important to know your budget total prior to choosing your design, so the log home kit company or architect will be able to assist you in choosing the best home design for your money.
The first step in the log home building process is to get approved for a construction loan so you know what your total budgeted amount is. Then it's time to shop - for the land and final design. The features of the land you purchase will narrow down your design choices.
Once you have chosen your land and design, there are additional choices to make. The logs you choose for your home is of upmost importance. There are many different options in logs, such as species of wood, green vs.dry wood, shrinkage rate of the logs, and the shape of the logs. Your geographical location and climate will influence many of these choices, since some areas are more humid than others, which affects the shrinkage of the logs. Red pine and white pine are common species of wood. Cedar is the best wood choice, but it is also the most expensive.
Who will actually build your home? If you purchase a kit, the log home company can assemble the shell for you on site after the foundation is set. The shell consists of the outer walls, windows and doors, and sub-floor. If you hire a general contractor, make sure they have experience in log homes and are reputable. The general contractor will be able to complete the home from start to finish. Some people do the interior finishing work themselves to save money. This is a good option if you think you have the knowledge and experience.
Do your research thoroughly when considering making an investment in a log home. Diynetwork.com is a good place to go for inspiration and a good look at the building process. Senty Handcrafted Log Homes, LLC has a website with a lot of useful information. They have floor plans, an explanation of building methods, and photos of clients' building projects. There are many more resources available, just search for log home construction companies in your area to get started.
