Poetry: Let me go

by Lucinda Davidovna

Created on: January 24, 2009

Can we help what we are?

Can we change what we become?

If I was born philosophising

Can I switch it just for fun?

Can I pursue something different;

Can I change, redefine me?

Can I lock myself up once more

When I've struggled to be free?

I was born of inconsistence

I've lived with it ever since

I feel like a torn-up dishrag,

Mopped and beaten, wrung and rinsed.

Can I disown my own nature?

Can I change the girl inside?

Can I run from something I love;

One more thing from which to hide?

Can I take my main salvation

And just throw it all away?

Can the girl I always have been

Rise up still from where she prays?

Can I find myself completed

By disowning my own heart?

Will it hinder, help or kill me

Tear my soul, my self apart?

If I squash myself still further

Then will I be killing me?

If I chain myself in cages

How can they say I'll feel free?
