Short stories: The muse

THE RING

I'd seen the results of her work before, and I could always sense her presence. She was a compelling spirit that simply would not go away until she was given form. Always coming from somewhere different with an engaging smile and a beckoning twinkle in her eye, she'd ask me to walk with her. I found her delightful.

And we would walk. Sometimes through open fields, sometimes through forests, sometimes along the ocean with its friendly waves rushing up to wet our feet, sparkling with light as they whispered "Come, follow us" and then returning to the deep. We would walk, the Muse and I, watching and listening all the way so that we wouldn't miss a thing.

There seemed to be a seamless continuity to it all, and I felt wonderfully connected in a way that was always clearer when she was there. "Good exercise for the mind; hungry minds need food for thought" she'd say. And these walks were spent foraging for just that.

It was on one of these walks that my eyes were struck by a dazzling ray of light. I realized that it had come from the hand of the Muse. I was awestruck. After examining it from many different angles, I found that no matter how I looked at it, I was seeing pure light.

"It's a sign of my engagement", she beamed with a smile."

"Oh, you thought the light was coming from me? No, these are just reflections from many facets. I am not the source. My beloved is the source. He has shown His light on me, and my sole desire and purpose is to reflect that light, to shine in the darkness so that the world might come to know Him. He is the Son, I am the moon."

"Some have been struck by this reflection. The world calls them moon-struck', or even worse, lunatics'. But you, my dear friend, if you keep these things in your heart and ponder what they mean, you will conceive. You will come to understand that to know Him is to love Him, and in loving, you will know that you have truly been created in the image of God."

Hmm. Now, there was food for thought that called for reflection on my part. When the Son returns for his bride, will He be looking for a sign of my engagement? How well do I know my blessed assurance? Will I be ready to give a reason for the faith that sustains me?

I'll always remember our walks, the Muse and I. We followed the Son. We were seekers after God's own heart, and God honors that.
How do I know? He gave His Word.

Let it shine.
