It is admirable when someone wants to donate to a charity. Those who are less fortunate depend on the kindness of strangers by means of charitable donations. Well-meaning contributors might think that there money is helping those in need, when it might be lining the pockets of an over-inflated bureaucracy or, even worse, cunning, underhanded scammers. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the individual to ensure that the charity they select gives most of the donation to those who need it. The best way to make sure that your money will be used for the maximum benefit is by doing research.
Many decide forgo the research and give to their local United Way and let them distribute where there is the greatest need. Even when giving to United Way, it is still best to research the charity to which they wish to give. For example, YMCA is supposed to provide free memberships to those who cannot afford it. But it is not known that there are only a limited number of free memberships. In some instances, those who really need it are not always the ones to receive it. That small fact might make the difference when donating to YMCA and another charitable agency.
