The BCS system revised: A new proposal

The BCS may not have placed the two most deserving teams in the National Title game, but it did create a true National Champion. The boys in orange and blue deserved the trophy. The only problem is that it is the wrong boys in orange and blue. Boise State went 13-0. In all of Division I NCAA Football, no other team accomplished that task. Florida, Ohio State, and USC all had at least one loss on their records (two losses for USC). Do not forget that one of USC's lossses came to an Oregon State team who was beaten by the Broncos of Boise State.

Yes, I understand that Boise State did not play the Nation's toughest schedule. They did, however, do everything in their power to earn the title. It is impossible to expect Boise State to face off against the powers of college football. They are only able to schedule a few out-of-conference games. After seeing how the Broncos took care of business against Oklahoma, no school with National Title hopes would brave the cold, blue Astroturf. Boise State was able to schedule a Pac10 team, in Oregon State, and they won that game. Even if you feel the Broncos did not prove themselves to be the best team, all of the other Division I teams proved that, at least on one day, someone was better.

Of course, ratings control the college football landscape. They will say that no one would watch a small school take on the Ohio State Buckeyes. Maybe that is true. Just look at the movie "Hoosiers." Yeah, America had no interest in that story. Sports fans are going to watch the National Championship game. If ratings were the only deciding factor, Notre Dame would play Nebraska every year. Hey, as Notre Dame fan, I would love this, but it is not fair.

Then there are those who think there should be one more game, after the Bowl Season. That would be unfair to Boise State. No other team made it though the season undefeated. More than that, who would they play? L.S.U. looked impressive in the Sugar Bowl. Florida is the paper champion. U.S.C. beat a very good Michigan team. Ohio State still only has one loss. All of these teams would be able to claim a shot at the Broncos. Still, Boise State did something none of these teams accomplished. They beat everyone they played.

Oh, there is also the playoff argument. That would not solve anything. If you put four teams in the playoff, Boise State still would not have made the cut; based on their BCS placement. Maybe a two-loss team would beat Ohio State; giving them one loss, while they watched a team with a worse record play for the prize. As for the ratings, after a month of Bowl Games, even the most hard-core fan could get burnt out on the sport.

Here is an idea. It may seem strangly fair. If there are two undefeated Division I teams, have them play for the title. If there are three undefeated teams, take into consideration who has played the toughest competition, and which teams have the best chances of winning. If there is one undefeated team, pick the one loss team with the same qualifications. These decisions cannot be made by a computer. Actual human beings can judge things computers cannot understand. The main point is that every team should start the year with the expectation that, if they win all of their games, they can win the National Championship.
