How to Spring Clean the Green Non-toxic Way
Before you begin the ritual of spring cleaning, take out your arsenal of everyday cleaning products and air fresheners. Now carefully read the entire label. Starting with an all purpose cleaner look for glycol ethers (labeled as Butyl Cellosolve, 2-butoxyethan or ethylene glycol monobutyl ether). This solvent is easily absorbed through the skin upon evaporation into the air. It travels through the bloodstream and deposits itself in the fatty tissues, where it can remain indefinitely. These solvents cause health problems ranging from birth defects to infertility.
Secondly, look for DEA or TEA listed as an ingredient. These are sudsing agents which react to nitrate, often used as a preservative. These chemicals form carcinogens that penetrate the skin on contact, according to a study in the American Journal of Industrial Medicine.
Next, take a look at the glass cleaner. Stay away from ammonia, which is highly irritating to the lungs and airways, especially for anyone with chronic heart or lung problems. Ammonia should certainly not be used by asthmatics. The solvents used in most glass cleaners also contain chemicals found in kerosene, gasoline and lighter fluid and can contaminate the lungs.
Now read the label on the tub and tile cleaner used in the bathroom. Many contain Sodium hydroxide, sodium hypochlorite ( bleach) or phosphoric acid. All of these are dangerous lung irritants and can burn skin and eyes. Bleach has also been linked to reproductive problems in men, increased rates of breast cancer in women and learning disabilities in children.
Take a look at the air fresheners used in your home. Avoid any that contain synthetic fragrances. These are known allergens. Many contain chlorofluorocarbons which have been shown to deplete the earth's ozone layer.
Purchase safer and more earth friendly products at your local health food store. Many of the large super market chains are now carrying "green" alternatives to toxic products that are better for your health and the environment. These non-toxic products work just as well as those laden with harmful chemicals. Look for ingredients such as biodegradable coconut oil, soybean and other nut oils, citrus essential oils, natural enzymes and plant-based formulas.
You can make your own water based air freshener using pure essential oils which clean the air by altering the structure of the molecules creating the smells, rather than simply masking them. Use about 8 drops to 2 and cups water in a spray bottle. You can also place a few drops of oil into a bowl of boiling water, placed centrally in a room. A light, refreshing blend for spring and summer can include lime, lemon, and lavender. For autumn and winter use the warming blend of frankincense, orange and geranium.
