What does it take to make poverty an important news story? This is a topic that people as well as governments do not want to acknowledge or admit. You may ask why or how is it possible that such a problem can be ignored or how it is only reported when it is followed by a huge catastrophe where not reporting it would be seen as missing a chance to make money . People in general don't like to hear or talk about poverty because of their personal fears of one day being there or maybe because they don't want to be a part of the solution to fixing the problem.
I guess this is the main reason why it goes unreported as much as it does and when it does get reported its usually in some far of land that the viewer are not threatened by. You rarely ever see stories about the poverty we are facing in are own neighborhoods or even in are counties or states. Even though these problems exist right in are backyards most of us will choose to ignore them or turn their heads when they see it instead of addressing it and getting involved in helping to make it better. Human beings have a great distaste for thing that can be unpleasant or unrewarding. I guess we are all a little shallow and self centered when it comes to are own lives and that of are closest family members. The world around us exists for us and no one else you might say. The sad thing is when you shelter yourself intentionally from the happenings around you, when the times comes for you to face reality it tends to make the problems you have to face harder to deal with. This is one of the main reasons why poverty and all that goes along with it is deemed as being not news worthy or as news that could make people who don't want to face it change the channel so as to continue their lives as drones that have only one purpose and that purpose is self.
The saddest thing about poverty and the lack of reporting that is done to acknowledge it is that few of us have a voice to change the problem and the ones that do, choose not to because they are either politicians looking to project perfect communities for their voters or news reporters who are censored by their bosses who are afraid to have advertising pulled for putting the real truth out there for the public to see. Civilization when you look at it from this point of view should wake up out the brain washed state we have been placed in and demand that the truth be told and that we as individuals should make it all of are responsibilities to correct the problems we have let sleep for so long .
