A major problem of advertisements that appear during sports events is that of what they essentially consist of. While I do enjoy a good joke and I don't mind seeing advertisements for alcohol and cars during sports events I do think that the NFL and other leagues need to look into what they are doing with the advertisements that are being used during their events.
The products that are being advertised on television are not a problem. After all, a majority of the people who watch sports events are men who are in the market for beer, cars and erectile dysfunction drugs. The problem, however, deals with the actual content of the advertisements themselves. There is a great amount of content in these ads that is downright ignorant and ridiculous.
It is upsetting to see that some companies treat the average sports viewer as a person who is more interested in empty sex appeal, fart jokes and gross-out jokes among other things. If you saw the previous Super Bowl you would know how bad things have gotten with some of these advertisements. Even some advertisements during the regular NFL season are bad enough. I don't think a hot woman is going to make me want to use a online domain registration site any more than if that woman wasn't there.
I think that the sports leagues that allow for these companies to advertise on their events should be regulating what they are going to be broadcasting so that we can get some more intelligent advertisements. These include advertisements that are informative and does not insult the viewer or at least have some decent humor value.
My opinion is not with children in mind. Remember, children make only a small portion of the viewing audience of most sports events. It is rather with general consumers like you and me in mind. No one should have to put up with companies trying to market themselves by trying to aim at everyone with the belief that we're too dumb to know the difference between substance and style.
And I'm not saying that the content should be toned down to the point where it is like what one would see in a mild-mannered local advertisement. I am saying here that the commercials should be smarter and more entertaining just like the sports event that is being aired.
The next time you see an advertisement for some company that uses a monkey, consistent fart jokes, a talking baby or empty sex appeal then you'll understand why we need to make some changes to what we see in our in-game advertisements.
