Poetry: A good day

by Mark Brazel

Created on: January 23, 2009

I drive ten miles

Across country roads

To a small empty house

Many memories it holds

See, I'm going to see my dad

It's cancer he has inside

Every day is more important

Every minute of the ride

I arrive and there he is

Outside upon his feet

I jump out of the car

"Hey boy!" was his greet

He's feeding all the birds

That's his hobby

Gives him peace

Like the cars he had to have

The Torino, the Caprice

It's great to see him moving

And it's really hard to tell

A stranger wouldn't know today

That he wasn't very well

So we go in for some coffee

Talk of fishing at the pond

Him and his old fly-rod

Of the bluegills he was fond

Says he's going to an auction

A few coins he'd like to buy

Add a few to his collection

If the prices aren't too high

We talk a little longer

And he asks if I can go

Says I could ride with him and his friend Sid

Said I can't, I need to mow

Off he goes in his little red truck

Pick up his friend along the way

They'll joke and laugh as old friends do

See, Dad's having.......a good day
