Improve indoor air quality to improve your health

Did you know that the quality of the air inside your home may be much more polluted than that of outside air? Poor air quality can contribute to allergies, asthma and other respiratory disorders(especially for babies, the elderly and people who's health is already compromised by allergies or illness) and can just plain stink.

There are many things that can contribute to poor indoor air. Synthetic furniture and carpets, pet hair and dander, dust and dust mites, smoking, fumes from cleaners and things like paints.

There are a number of simple things that can make a difference for cleaner, fresher air indoors.

1. If possible, open windows daily.

2. Clean vents, filters on air conditioning and heating units, and air ducts on regular basis and when you first move into a new home.

3. Go green. Use houseplants to clear the air of carbon dioxide the natural way. Not only will you have cleaner air, you will beautify your home. Try ivy, ferns, aloe vera, and African violets. The plants you choose will be based on the amount of light each room receives. For instance, bamboo plants do well with little light while ferns need more light. Just make sure not to over water as the soil can become mouldy.

4. Go green when you clean. Using non-toxic cleansers will help keep your home pollution-free in addition to preserving the environment. If you must use chemicals such as bleach, make sure to have proper ventilation.

5. Bust that mould. Mould can be most often be found in basements, kitchens and bathrooms and can contribute to poor indoor air quality. Get rid of the mould and maintain the humidity of your home with a humidifiers or de-humidifier

6. Use a good vacuum with a HEPA filter to clean away pet hair, dust and other allergens. Most vacuums come with a furniture attachment that can clean upholstered sofas and chairs

7. Do not allow smoking in your home. Smoke outside.

8. If you have an attached garage, remember to never idle your car inside or with the door closed.

9. Get rid of dust mites by washing linens weekly in hot enough water. To protect mattresses and pillows from dust mites cover with allergen proof/ resistant cases. Use blinds or use curtains that are washable. Carpets can be havens for dust mites. If possible use hardwood flooring.

10. Install a carbon monoxide detector. This could save your life. Test monthly to ensure batteries or get one that plugs into the wall.

With a few of these simple tips, you can improve indoor air quality for a fresher home and better health. Breathe in fresher air for a fresher life.
