How to deal with rude people

Rude people seem to be everywhere. On the highway driving like maniacs. In the checkout line berating the cashier. In the restaurant smoking in the no smoking section. In the mall swearing while they talk in front of your children. While it may be the right of a person to behave in a rude manner, this does not make it the right thing to do. There are a few things we need to remember when dealing with rude people.

Do Not Become Angry

Two wrongs will never make a right. Just because other people are acting in an inappropriate manner does not mean that you should. In fact, when people are behaving rudely it is even more important that you do not. Throwing gasoline on a fire does nothing but increase the flames. Foolish or angry behavior from you toward a rude person will accomplish nothing. Many times, it does nothing but raise tensions, increases your stress levels and make matters worse.

Calm Down

In situations when you become angry stop and calm down before you act. Create some method of calming yourself that will help you think more clearly and act more responsibly. How many foolish things been said or done in the heat of angry? Far too many to count, so why add another? Being rude when others are rude solves absolutely nothing. Take a few moments, swallow the words that were on the tip of your tongue and count to ten or twenty. Maybe fifty if the situation demands it. Just do not do or say something stupid that you will regret later. Always calm down before you act or speak.

Think Before You Act

After you calm down, think before you act. There have been many instances when people have acted before they engaged their brain. Thinking through what should be done is crucial to responding in an appropriate manner. Actions speak louder than words and if we act in a poor manner, the one that is hurt is us. When we rise above rude behavior with our own behavior, we are always better off because of it. Thinking about what you will do or what you will say achieves more good than you may ever know. When we allow our minds to grasp the situation and respond effectively, we reveal our maturity and civility.

Give the Benefit of the Doubt

Everyone has bad days when we do not always reveal our best. Yes you do have those kind of days. Remember that we are all just human and that we all make mistakes. There are some days that get the best of us and we can come across as being rude. The person may be unaware that they have offended you or that they are in fact being rude. Sometimes
