Turtix: Rescue Adventure is an attractive-looking platform game by Alawar that takes place in a fantasy world full of strange beasts and quite a few talking turtles.
In the game you play as a turtle called Turtix, a magician's apprentice. One day the magician (who is also a turtle) is a teaching a class of young, you guessed it, turtles. He is showing them a recipe for a spell, but he misreads the ingredients and accidentally transports the young students across the world in floating bubbles to three areas, the magic forest, underground caves and barren desert. This is where you come in; Turtix is sent on a mission to safely return these young turtles.
On starting the game, you set up a new profile, here you get to choose the level of difficulty, there are two, Casual' and Hardcore'. Casual mode is designed for people who are new to platform games where you and the little turtles have unlimited lives. Hardcore mode, however, is for the more experienced gamer where you have to replay levels if you fail.
The game has simple controls which can be performed by using the keyboard, mouse or joystick: you can move left and right, jump, perform an action or look around the level. The game is a similar concept to the classic game Lemmings' where you have to safely clear paths for your lemmings, or in Turtix's case, turtles to a portal.
The difference with this game is that to clear the path you have to eliminate enemies, avoid traps, move obstacles, open doors, use teleports and perform various other tasks. As if doing all this to rescue the turtles was not enough you also collect stars, find gems in secret areas and search chests for bonuses. All this is done against the bonus time clock which you have to beat in order to ace the level. At the end of each level you are rated on the amount of turtles you have rescued, stars found, secrets found and how much time was left on the bonus clock, depending on your score, you are awarded with a bronze, silver or gold medal.
The sound quality in this game is very good and the backing music is a pleasant easy-listening tune. The really attractive, cartoon-style graphics are much better than I expected from the game. They run smoothly and the little extras throughout the game add to this, for example, if you leave Turtix still for about ten seconds then he starts playing on a handheld videogame until you carry on.
I have played many similar games to this as I am an avid platform-gamer and I would say even though the basic ideas for the game are nothing new, I really enjoyed this combination of puzzle-solving and Lemmings-style rescue.
I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this game as it is probably aimed at younger gamers but I think that I will purchase Turtix. Overall I give it 4 out of 5.
