When we first learn to crochet, all of our efforts are focused on learning the basic stitches: chain stitch, single crochet, half-double crochet, double crochet, etc. After a while, we look to add some other stitches to our repertoire, for variety and more interesting patterns. The V-stitch is an easy addition.
As the name implies, a V-stitch is shaped like the letter V. It leaves a small space in the pattern, for an open look. Unlike the basic stitches, where we crochet in each stitch from the previous row until our work is the size we want, the V-stitch is just a bit more involved. It uses two different stitches: the chain-stitch and your choice of single, half-double, or double crochet. (Instructions for basic stitches are listed below.)
V-STITCH:
Chain an even number of stitches, any width. (This is for double crochet, only.)
Row 1: Skip the first 3 chains; this counts as one double-crochet. In the 4th chain, *double crochet, chain 1, double crochet* in the same chain; one V-stitch made. Skip next (5th) chain. Repeat *V-stitch in chain, skip one chain* until 2 chains from the end. Skip one chain, double crochet in last chain. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet). Insert the hook in the chain-1 space (under the stitch, not in the chain) and crochet one V-stitch. Continue across, crocheting one V-stitch in each chain-1 space. Double crochet in the top of the chain-3 from the previous row. Turn.
Rows 3+: Repeat Row 2 until desired length is reached.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
ADJUSTMENTS:
For Single Crochet, start by chaining an even number of stitches.
Row 1: Skip the first chain; make the first V-stitch *single crochet, chain 1, single crochet* in the 2nd
chain. Continue as above, ending with one single crochet in the last chain. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 1 (counts as first single crochet). Insert the hook in the chain-1 space (under the stitch, not in the chain) and crochet one V-stitch. Repeat, as above, ending with one single crochet in the top of the chain-1 from the previous row. Turn.
Rows 3+: Repeat Row 2 until desired length is reached.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
For Half-Double Crochet, start by chaining an odd number of stitches.
Row 1: Skip the first 2 chains; make the first V-stitch *half-double crochet, chain 1, half-double crochet* in the 3rd chain. Skip next (4th) chain. Repeat, as above, ending with one half-double crochet in the last chain. Turn.
Row 2: Chain 2 (counts as first half-double crochet). Insert the hook in the chain-1 space (under
