Many talented writers are submitting high quality articles on the Helium site. Everyone cannot be ranked #1. Sometimes a lower rank indicates the writer has missed the mark correlating his work to the title; other times the raters choose another article for myriad reasons of personal preference.
If a writer consistently produces well-written pieces and the majority of them place in the top 75%, chances are his low ranking articles are not an indication of some shortcoming in his writing.
If a writer has done his best work and is satisfied with the result, a low-rank is unfortunate, but nothing to become stressed about. Sometimes it takes awhile for ratings to settle and reflect accurate quality. When should a writer care about his low rank and seek to improve it with a revision?
Some of the reasons a writer will want to revise a low-rated article:
* Obvious errors
In some cases, a low rating can serve as a red flag to make the writer aware of flaws in his article. Each time an article is submitted, the writer should read the posted work with the scrutiny of an editor to insure he did not miss something in the final draft. Even a well-written article can be rated down for grammatical errors or poor spelling and punctuation. If the writer becomes aware of such an infraction, he can prevail upon the typo-fix desk at Content@helium.com to help him "clean up his act."
* A writer feels he can do better
Sometimes in the rush of submitting an article for a contest or the Market Place, a writer will do a less than stellar job. Later, when the article is nagging at him with a low rank, he might want to do a revision and improve it for his own satisfaction and better rating potential. This will usually take a leapfrog revision to accomplish.
* Additional Information
After an article has been on the site for awhile, the writer may have additional information to add in order to enhance the article. For example, an article on writing and rating for Helium might need to be updated with additional information as the changes to the site occur over time. A writer will want to leapfrog his article with the additional information or corrected changes, again, to put forth the best possible piece of work and possibly enhance rating potential.
* Content contains inaccuracies
If the content of an article contains flawed information the writer will want to make a correction as soon as possible. His awareness of the inaccuracy might be prompted by a flag from a rater
