Travelling to Europe has become almost a requirement on the "list of great things to do" for both young and old for decades now. But for many that haven't travelled, it is a problem figuring out exactly how to do it. Where should you go? What should you see? The number of times I have been asked by friends of friends of friends for advice on what are the best places to go to in Europe is far too high to bother counting. I, myself, was in the same position when I first ventured out on my own to discover the "Old World". The same questions plagued me, and I also went to others for help.
And so, in order to save you time, stress and worry, I have compiled a short list of the most interesting, welcoming, and relatively unknown gems of the fair continent. You won't find Paris or London on my list, because you are probably headed to at least one of those destinations anyways. The true valuable information on travelling to Europe is when you find something new, something that others might not know. You might have other plans, limited time, limited money, etc. but if you can work at least one of these destinations into your time in Europe, I am sure you will enjoy it.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Many people have heard the joke about what the Scotsman is wearing under the kilt. Well the riches hidden in Edinburgh are most likely a much more welcome discovery! Edinburgh is probably the most mystical city in all of Europe. The history of Edinburgh goes way beyond text books, and the long list of royalty and military commanders that ruled this fair town. It goes deeper than the buildings that intoxicate you with their rough, aged facades. The real history of Edinburgh dives deep under the streets, in the caverns of the hills and the cellars of the houses that line old town. The mythology of ghosts and witchcraft, with its pagan rituals and Celtic chaos, create a perfectly mad contrast against the ordered and repressive imperial history of the British crown.
Edinburgh is full of sights and delights for every traveler's taste. You will find Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace for a taste of the royal history. The dazzling green parks provide an amazing setting back-dropped by rocky crags (or small mountains) and Arthur's Seat, the largest crag in the area, which is an interesting climb rewarding the trekker with amazing views over the city. A thirst to discover the pagan history of Scotland can be quenched by a trip to Calton Hill, or going on a ghost tour of the area around the Royal
