Affordable living solutions in St. Louis, MO

Compared to rural areas of Missouri, St Louis prices for living arrangements can be rather costly. There are some more economical ideas depending upon your age and your family situation.

1. If you're single, find a roommate. There are always adds on Craigslist and the newspaper for single roommates. Finding one you get to know a little bit or see that the living situation is acceptable for you may take a few meetings. If you go this route you will find yourself cutting the cost of living in half. This can be a very good solution for the college student or recent graduate.

2. If you're older, look into the retirement homes. No, not a nursing home or assisted living home. A retirement complex. Retain all of your belongings and live the way you would like in a rent controlled environment. These homes vary in size, accommodations, and prices. Some will offer various meals through out the day making it even easier on your grocery budget. These can be a very positive experience for the older person or couple as they can meet and socialize with other people of the same age. There is generally some type of game room where you can play cards, bingo, or other enjoyable activities. Usually there is some form of public transportation available at the residency so that you are free to go shop or dine out whenever you like.

3. Look into various apartment complexes. Due to the amount of complexes available in St Louis this can be a very competitive market. Watch the paper and advertisements for sign on bonuses where you can get a free month's rent or get your rent set at a very attractive price for a set amount of time. Take a visit to the apartment and see what is available. This is ideal for small families, young couples, and single people of all ages.

4. Look into the outer suburbs of the city for more affordable renting prices on homes. For example Affton which is in South St Louis is not directly in the center of the city. The homes may be a bit older than newer, more stylish areas but they will also be substantially cheaper in rental prices.

5. Find a home that needs a bit of work. Often times if you are willing to put in a few hours of labor into a home, the landlord will offer negotiations on the rent price. Offering to throw a coat of paint on the walls and re-insulate those pipes, might earn you a huge reduction in rental price. Don't assume just because the rental needs work the landlord will work with you. Always talk about it up front with the landlord before
